I don't know about that. Considering that I'm old enough to be his father, I'm not exactly feeling as young as springtime

Finally, can we stop bringing up Adrian Beltre in regard to Cal Ripken? Cal was asked , "Is there one player now when you’re flipping through the TV you have to stop and watch, be it an at-bat or a pitcher who draws your attention in?"

The kid Manny Machado in Baltimore captured everybody’s attention with some of his physical skills. He’s a shortstop, then because of needs with the team he gets an opportunity at third, and he just goes out there and he’s the best third baseman in the league. Just some of the plays he’s able to make with his skill set, that’s fun to watch.

How about second all-time only to Eddie Mathews.

Mathews was pretty unbelievable as a young player. OPS+ of 172, 171 and 170 at ages 21-23, and 128 HR in those three seasons.

Of all the lists of young, destined-for-Cooperstown comparables this one ain't that great. Mathews of course was a shoo-in for the Hall. Although McGraw had some awesome years for the old NL O's he was injury and weird-19th-century-infectious-disease prone. He peaked at 26, when he had an impossible season by today's standards (one homer, .547(!) OBP), then only lasted briefly as a regular after that. Buddy Lewis was hampered by playing for the Senators and losing three-and-a-half years to WWII. And Freddy Lindstrom is in the Hall but a) he's most famous for two balls hopping over his head in a World Series game, and b) is only in because Frankie Frisch browbeat the Vet's Committee into inducting everyone he ever played with or against in the 20s.

He was one of the great young players of all time, and he also didn't have much of a discernible aging pattern until quite late in life. From age 21 or 22 through his mid-30s he was a 5-8 win player pretty much every year.

I say "extend" him this offseason. 6 years-80 million. It gives him financial security for life and still a chance to "cash-in" on a free-agent contract before the age of 30. It's pretty similar to the contract the O's inked Adam Jones to a few years ago. Smart move...
